What is Parkinson's Disease?

Almost one millon people in the U.S. have Parkinson's disease (or PD).

Parkinson's disease is the loss of certain nerve cells in the brain. It affects the body when speaking, walking and performing other activities.

The symptoms vary depending on the person. Among the most common symptoms are: tremors which involve shaking of the entire body (for example, shaking of the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face); stiff and rigid muscles; slow movements in the body; loss of balance and coordination; and difficulties walking. For most patients, tremors are the most severe symptom.

The cause of the illness is unkown and there is not a cure, but there are some treatments such as medications and surgery that will reduce the symptoms. Parkinson's is a progressive disease, which means it gets worse over time. This usually happens gradually over many years.

Scientists continue searching for the causes of Parkinson's and possible effective cures.

The goal of Mary's Wish is to support Mary Hoffman and other patients with Parkinson's disease by raising money at our upcoming fundraising event.
